NO MORE LATE ESSAYZ
This was for the UNSW diary cover competition.
I was shortlisted but unfortunately couldn't win $1000.
I was shortlisted but unfortunately couldn't win $1000.
Concept:
Parties, activities, sports, and having sneaky drinks after tutorials, are all the fun parts of being a student.
Sadly, the nature of student life is procrastinating for weeks and ending up cramming the last few nights with assignments.
I wanted to send a kind reminder to the students to use the dairy appropriately without procrastinating in 2012.
This is portrayed by using an funky/party-ish kind of type so the message doesn't seem too straight forward and harsh. It is more playful and attempts to change the negative image of studying. By using this type I wish that the students and I can take the same kind of playful enthusiasm towards their uni studies.

Japanese Design Today 100
A few months ago during Sydney Design, I went to a talk by Noriko Kawakami, the Associated Director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in TOKYO MIDTOWN. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a centre for design and creation directed by Issey Miyake, Taku Satoh and Naoto Fukasawa.
She talked about how skilled traditional Japanese crafts were disappearing because of the cheap mass produced products overwhelming the market. She mentioned that traditional crafts and designers had to collaborate with each other to keep the traditional craft and skills alive. One of the most inspiring designs she talked about was, Issey Miyake's 132 5.
This collections of clothes are based on 2D geometric shapes and origami. These shapes can be pulled open into dresses, skirts, shirts and pants. Whats really amazing about this collections is the fabric. The material is made out of "up-cycled" polyester fibres from old tents and sports wear from the recycling company TEIJIN. The company fully breaks down the fibre to a molecular level and re-weaves it like new polyester fibre. The tough properties of the fabric allows the geometric shape to kept its form and still open and fold back to its original fold.

I Never Knew You Could Do this On a Scooter
While the rest of the world stopped playing around with scooters like 10 years ago. Australians kept on doing it.

MIND GAME
Paint sex, a god with multiple personalities, dancing in whales, yakuza running 120km per hour, this movie takes you into a colourful world of visual orgasms. Director Masaaki Yuasa and STUDIO4°C have created a masterpiece. Its defiantly going up there with my most favourite animations. In many ways I can relate to the main character Nishi. Living in a giant whale away from the world with the people you love isn't such a bad idea.

Watch Out! Fuckin Eyesore!
I did these posters for a uni assignment.
The brief was to make a campaign to raise awareness for a certain community.
I really didn't want to make those boring awareness campaigns for the government, but I needed a realistic sponsor.
I decided to stick to the fixed gear community and raise awareness for those terrible drivers to watch out for bicycles, especially taxi drivers. If you ride any kind of bicycle in any city I think you would understand.
I choose RVCA(a surf, skate, art, street culture brand) to sponsor this campaign, thinking it would be a good marketing strategy for them. By sharing a similar idea towards something would establish a bond with between the consumer and the brand (In the illustration below I took out the RVCA logo). Also by using controversial language I thought it would attract attention and create a "Badass" feeling of the brand.
By using gorilla advertising strategies, like posting up posters around the city, it would bring attention to the target audience for RVCA.
Helvetica
I watched the documentary "Helvetica" the other day thinking it would make it easier to pick out my font for my graphic design assignment. It just made things complicated.
shown to me by Elissa Rowe
The documentary made it seem like Helvetica was the ultimate font.
So I checked if it works on my illustration.
In Helvetica, "Fuckin" seems abusive and direct. It also doesn't fit the illustration well.
When it is in my bubble front it feels playful and less abusive.
I think in this case Helvetica doesn't work.

YEsss the Sixties!!!
Ken Kesey threw parties all over the U.S in the 60's called the "Acid Test" and made music with a bunch of weirdoes.
Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead
"I was in a candy store. All the stuff that was happening was new: this rock and roll explosion, the Acid Tests and all that kid of stuff. No one had ever even imagined that stuff like that possibly happen until it did. It was actually better than realizing my dreams."

Fixie Booklet
Make an experimental book based on a certain community.
- Two to Three double page spreads
- limited colour palette (two to three colours)
- demonstrates thoughtful investigation of typography
- experiment with book design (folding, binding...etc)
- experiment with materials in book-form
- folds to A5
This booklet is made for an awareness campaign for the fixed geared community to
wear helmets.
The booklet uses only one colour, and is folded from one A3 size paper, to make the assignment cost and eco friendly.

Help Japan
I did these two pieces earlier this year, when I was feeling homesick about Japan. A few months later when I heard the news in March about the tsunami and the nuclear power plant in Fukushima it really freaked me out. I think I sort of predicted the future.
My Eyes Cry Waves
More than 10,000 deaths, more than 17,440 missing and hundreds of thousands remain homeless after the
Earthquake hit Japan. Imagine all the the people suffering.
Gas Mask Girl
What will happen to Japan in the future?

America's Educational System
Now we know why some Americans are so stupid.
Its not their fault. Blame the Educational System.
Davis Guggenheim, the award winning filmmaker who did
"An Inconvenient Truth" shows the world how bad the public educational system is in the U.S. It is depressing to see so many children struggling for better lives when they can't do anything about it. I hope American child support organisations know what they are doing when they start up schools in undeveloped countries.
